Many people recognize these fish not as Beta Splendens, their genus and species, but by their common name, Siamese Fighting Fish. We had these when I was a child growing up, and I loved to watch them swim around for hours. I have a fantastic book where a photographer used strobe photography to capture them swimming and fighting. Mandy said they look like the tiniest dragons.
